The “knockout” competition is confined for the teams competing in the Junior League, which also includes a “Senior” Club’s 2nd XV team. The Branch presented the trophy - called the Metropolitan Cup which reflect the fact that all the participating teams are based in the Dublin metropolitan area .
To season 2006-07 there have been 86 finals played, with 14 different winning clubs. Of the 14 winners only two Junior clubs have won the competition Suttonians RFC (now a senior club) in 1946-47 and Seapoint RFC, who won in back to back seasons 2004-05 & 2005-06 and also in season 2007-08.
